Rescue Corgis
AN INTRODUCTION TO MAYFLOWER'S RESCUE PROGRAM
The Mayflower Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club is dedicated to providing a comprehensive rescue program for purebred Pembroke Welsh Corgis in our region which covers all of the New England states plus New York and Connecticut. We have a large team of volunteers who work extremely hard to find wonderful new homes for corgis that come into our program.
In the following paragraphs I will outline how our program works both for those who wish to surrender their dogs to our rescue as well as for those who wish to adopt one of our rescue dogs. At the end of the program description you will find the names and contact information to help you with either surrendering or adopting a dog and finally there is our adoption application which must be downloaded and completed. No dog can be adopted from Mayflower Rescue without a completed application.
Also please understand that most of the dogs that come into our rescue are older, at least 5 or 6 years of age. It is rare that a dog much younger comes into rescue. We almost never have a dog under one year of age. If you are only interested in a puppy then I suggest you go to the Breeder Referral section of this website and contact a breeder who lives near to you. They may have young dogs available for purchase as well as puppies.
****Also, while you can call any member of our team if you have a question, please understand that CALLING US WILL NOT SPEED UP THE TIME IT TAKES TO HAVE A DOG PLACED WITH YOU. We never know when a new dog will come into rescue and we do not place on a first come, first served basis.****

SURRENDERING YOUR DOG:
If you wish to surrender your Pembroke Welsh Corgi to our rescue, please contact the State Rescue Coordinator for your state. All of the coordinators and their contact information are listed at the bottom of this page. The coordinator will ask you a number of questions about your dog and why you wish to surrender him or her. These questions will include things such as the age, sex, health status of your dog and where you got your dog. We will also ask you to describe the dog's personality and behavior to us, how he gets along with strangers, children, and other dogs and pets.
If, after this brief discussion, the coordinator feels your dog is appropriate for our program then she will arrange for a member of our club to come to your home and meet your dog. This meeting will be to give our volunteer an opportunity to get to know your dog a bit. She may ask to take your dog for a walk and she will probably ask you to do a number of things with your dog so that she can see how he behaves. If, after the visit, our decision is to accept your dog then we will move ahead from there.
Rest assured, we will screen all candidates to adopt your dog by having one of our club members make a personal visit to their home to meet all family members. We also check references. Once the dog is placed with an adopter, we make frequent contacts with the adopter to be sure the transition is going well. If there are problems, we will make suggestions and, if necessary, bring in others to help. Usually if there are problems, they are small ones and can be eliminated. If, despite all our efforts, the adoption is not working, we will take the dog back and find him a new home. We are always ready to help the dog, no matter how long it has been since it was adopted and we will always take him back!

ADOPTING A DOG FROM MAYFLOWER:
The first thing you must do if you wish to adopt a dog from Mayflower Rescue is to complete and submit our online application. CALLING ONE OF OUR RESCUE TEAM MEMBERS WILL NOT SPEED UP THE TIME IT CAN TAKE TO HAVE A DOG PLACED WITH YOU.
We match the people to the dog, not vice versa. The needs of the dog are primary, not the date of the submission of the application. So, depending on how flexible you can be, especially with things such as age and sex of the dog, the more likely it is that you will be matched with one of our rescue dogs. However, please be sure you are comfortable with your choices because if you put in things that really are not acceptable to you it will not help anyone.
When we have a dog in our rescue, the rescue coordinator requests applications that appear to match with the dog. Those applications will be reviewed and the coordinator will contact the people who appear to be the best match. If, after the discussion, both the possible adopter and the coordinator feel this sounds like a good home for our dog, we move ahead with scheduling a home evaluation visit. This visit will involve having one of our club members come to your home and meet all of the family members. She will ask you, among other things, to discuss your prior experiences with dogs, where the dog will live, your neighborhood, and how you intend to train the dog and deal with common behavioral issues. After this visit, if everyone agrees, the dog will be placed with you.
We will be in touch with you quite often after the adoption takes place to see how things are going and help you with any questions. We will always be available to help you with the dog, no matter how long it has been since the adoption! And, if for any reason, you can no longer keep the dog, we will always take him back and find a new home.

ADOPTION FEE AND HOW TO MAKE A DONATION TO OUR RESCUE:
We are an all volunteer rescue. We do not have a building or training facilities. Everything we do, we do with volunteer help and we pay for all of the dog's needs with donations to our rescue.
We have a fee to adopt a dog from us. It is on a sliding scale based on the dog's age and if there were any extraordinary circumstances to his rescue. The fee scale begins at $500 for very young dogs and gradually decreases. We need to collect this fee because many dogs come to us in need of extensive veterinary care and that is expensive. Many of the dogs have not been to a vet recently and we will have them examined, brought up to date on their vaccinations, and treat them if they have any health issue. Many of our dogs have needed dental care and we provide it. Some need to be neutered or spayed, others need major surgery. We do what possible to give the dog a healthy life.
If you wish to make a donation to help our rescue program, we are so grateful! All of your money goes to help the dogs; we have no administrative overhead. Your donation should be made out to Mayflower Pembroke Welsh Corgi Club and the check should be sent to Annie Baker. Annie's address is 25 Windswept Drive, Sandwich, MA 02563. Your donation will be personally acknowledged.
